Laura Kieler is a new devised piece of theatre, exploring the dualitites between Ibsen’s Nora (the protagonist from A Doll’s House) and her real life inspiration, the young author Laura Kieler.
The play follows the pallelell fictional and historical storylines, of Laura Kieler and Ibsen, and how their relationship diffused into their work. Split into three sections, each revolving around a period of their lives, mirrored by a peice of their writing, played by a seperate cast of actors.

Breach theatre worked with Professor Shepherd-Barr and Tzen Sam, from Oxford University, to translate Laura’s writings, as well as letters between the two authors. Unveiling their interwined relationship which spanned over many decades, from his 1865 play Brand to her drama Men of Honor in 1890 to his last play When We Dead Awaken in 1899 and beyond.
Beyond drawing light to a forgotton female author of the late 19th centuary, the piece explored themes of story and ownership, as well as the struggles of being a female writer of that period.
