Less Than a Chair delves into the dark chapter in Swiss history; of the Verdingkinder practice from 1912-1987.
A topic part of many Swiss families’s histories, including the choreographer.
The statement of her family member: "I was worth less than a chair", gave the piece its name.
The show begins by exploring the heart-wrenching separation of children from their families, some forcibly taken by authorities and others abandoned by their parents. It then shifts focus to the hardships and abuse endured by these children in foster care. The show concludes by shedding light on the survivors, those who continue to struggle with the lasting effects of their trauma and those who have managed to overcome their past and build a new life for themselves.
